West Virginia entered the season with national championship aspirations partly induced by the euphoria from the historic 70-point performance in the Discover Orange Bowl. The goal was clear, the Mountaineers wanted to head back to Miami with hopes of winning the school's first national championship.

And through the season's first five games, it looked as if the Mountaineers would cash in on those predictions rising to as high as No. 5 in the polls with a win over Texas in Austin.
