Holgorsen's Take: Big 12 Teleconference
Fresh off earning bowl eligibility last weekend, West Virginia (6-5, 3-5) will shoot for win No. 7 when it hosts Kansas (1-10, 0-8) this weekend on senior day at Mountaineer Field.
Head coach Dana Holgorsen doesn't believes the event will be emotional, because due to the win last weekend the true senior day will come in the bowl game, but he acknowledges the importance for some of the fans to have the opportunity to see the group.
"There's about 22 seniors that it means a lot to. I assume our entire fan base would want to come watch Geno Smith and Tavon Austin. Those two are dynamic playmakers that I really don't have to coach that much," he said.
Holgorsen credited the Mountaineers for sticking together in the face of adversity during the five-game losing streak especially the senior class for leading the group.
"Really proud of how they fought," he said.
When it comes to Geno Smith, Holgorsen said that the senior signal-caller handled also handled the losing streak fine and the losses weren't a reflection on Smith's play, more the parity of the Big 12 Conference, as the head man referred to every game as a battle.
"We have nine teams that are bowl eligible and 8 of the 10 teams have been ranked in the top 25," he said.
The Mountaineers have struggled in the backend on defense this season, but the strength of the Jayhawks is on the ground running the football. Still, Holgorsen believes that it will be plenty challenging for the Mountaineers due to the Kansas coaching staff's experience at every level of football and their understanding of schemes and football.
"We've just got to tackle well, we've got to get in our gaps," he said.
"We're going to have to regroup and get out there and try to get our seventh win," he added.
Now that the Mountaineers have secured bowl eligibility, Holgorsen said he has no preference as to where the bowl destination will be.
"West Virginia's always traveled well," he said. " Becoming bowl eligible is a big step then after that any bowl game is fantastic."
