Bob Huggins has said on multiple occasions that he never saw this season coming with West Virginia at 13-14, and 6-8 in Big 12 Conference play, but with a league so even the results aren't surprising given the number of mistakes this Mountaineers team has had up to this point.
"Our turnovers have been at the worst time, in the worst ways," Huggins said. "You can't have live ball turnovers; they result in baskets for the other team."
In addition to the turnovers, the Mountaineers have struggled mightily with shooting the basketball and because the league is so balanced it makes things much more difficult not being able to get the ball in the basket.
"When you're making shots everything is good and when you're not making shots you struggle," he said.
The results in the games are not due to lack of effort in practice as there has been a major focus on shooting the ball and players often come in and work on their own. Still, overall there are a number of things that the Mountaineers have had to adjust to during their first year in the Big 12.
"I think the power forwards in the Big 12 are 3/4s instead of 4/5s in the Big East and in some instances they run a lot of offense through them," he said. "And I think in the Big 12 it's going to take a year to figure out the travel situation."
Huggins said that West Virginia officials have various ideas to address the second issue, but he plans on sitting down after the season and figuring out what is the most fair and equitable solution to the problem.
The Mountaineers will host Baylor at 8 p.m. Wednesday night and it will be the second meeting between the two teams in the past two weeks after the Bears 80-60 victory in Waco. In that game, the Mountaineers kept it close early before turnovers doomed any shot at a road victory.
In this meeting, Huggins was simple and to the point about what needs to change.
"Not throw them the ball," he said.
