Huggins: Still fighting
West Virginia (13-16, 6-10) has only two regular season games remaining on the schedule but head coach Bob Huggins isn't throwing in the towel just yet.
"We're going to prepare the best we can possibly prepare," he said.
The Mountaineers veteran head coach has made a number of adjustments throughout the season, tinkering to see what works with his team including most recently moving to a new style of offense instead of the motion that has become a staple under Huggins.
"I think it helped us, we had some chances in the Baylor game and we played pretty well against Kansas for a while but when they shoot the ball the way they shot the ball then we don't have a chance," he said.
Huggins believes that adjustments have been difficult due to the lack of game-time experience on the roster outside of senior Deniz Kilicli. The maturation of the sophomore class coupled with not getting what Huggins expected out of the transfers also has played a role.
"Bottom line is we all have to do a better job, me included," he said.
The Mountaineers will travel to Oklahoma Wednesday for the third meeting between the two programs this season after the Sooners traveled to Morgantown in early January and in the Old Spice Classic in November. West Virginia held leads late in both games, but left each get away eventually losing to the Sooners in both contests.
West Virginia will have to contend with Romero Osby, who is the team's leading scorer at over 15 points per game, and has been playing even better as of recently.
"I think he's just getting more opportunities," he said. "He's a hard matchup for any so called four-man to guard because he can bounce it at the rim and he makes shots obviously."
When asked if Huggins would scale back the out of conference scheduling next season, the head coach said the focus will be on managing the travel better after spending a year in the Big 12 Conference.
