Holgorsen's Take: 8/8/13

Most of the discussion was pointed on one position during Dana Holgorsen's Thursday media briefing and it's the one spot that he likes to talk about the least at this stage of fall camp.

Inquiries about the quarterback position dominated the roughly 20-minute session, with discussion jumping around from topic to topic.

Holgorsen said that the upcoming situational drills will begin to separate Clint Trickett, Paul Millard and Ford Childress, due to how they will handle the offense and certain situation behind center. The West Virginia coaches have been evaluating not only the signal callers, but the rest of the positions on the field watching film and getting an idea on where certain players stand in regards to upcoming decisions.

With nine practices remaining before the Mountaineers break fall camp, Holgorsen doesn't anticipate any movement one way or the other in determining the starting quarterback until that time as elapsed. He did say that the reps will go from 33 percent a piece in the skeleton drills to picking two quarterbacks every day to get 50-percent of the reps and then rotating.

"It will be 100-percent equal for the next nine practices and then we'll make a decision," he said.

That decision is one that Holgorsen isn't sure if he will announce especially if the battle is close and he expects that the closer the competition is, the more tight lipped any potential announcement would be. However, due to social media and player excitement he believes it would be surprising if it doesn't get out to the public anyway sometime before the season begins.

"We probably want everyone to be in the dark. We won't go into the first game without a clue of who's going to start," he said.

One thing is for sure, Holgorsen does not anticipate using a two quarterback system, saying that he has never do it and doesn't plan on it for this year. However, that doesn't mean he won't have two or more quarterbacks that will be ready to play if called upon.

Wednesday the Mountaineers held their first two-a-day of the summer, with practice in the morning and then due to the weather the team utilized all three of the fields at the facilities. Still, even with the movement, the team wasn't affected at all. Defensively the Mountaineers will begin tackling this week as well.

Still no update on true freshmen Darrien Howard and Isaac McDonald, who are dealing with clearinghouse issues, and junior college transfer d'Vante Henry who is battling personal ones. All three players have been absent since the beginning of fall camp.

Injury wise, sophomore cornerback Nana Kyeremeh will miss the season and redshirt with a shoulder injury that will require surgery, while junior running back Dreamius Smith is battling a thigh bruise that kept him out of practice for the past few days. Dante Campbell reinjured the shoulder that he had surgery on in the offseason and at this point there is no update.
