Phillip commits to West Virginia
West Virginia added a valuable piece to its roster for next season Sunday after Independence C.C. (Kan.) guard Tarik Phillip committed to the Mountaineers following an official visit.
Phillip picked up an offer from the Mountaineers at the end of March and scheduled a visit shortly after for the April 11 weekend. WVSports.com has confirmed the commitment through multiple sources.
The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder, averaged 18 points per game this past season and was named Jayhawk East Player and Freshman of the year despite only playing 18 games this past season.
Larry Harrison served as the lead recruiter for Phillip and the Mountaineers became a serious player after the assistant and head coach Bob Huggins stopped by Independence earlier this spring.
Phillip is originally from Brooklyn, N.Y. and signed with South Carolina before failing to qualify academically. He will have three years to play three once he graduates and is expected to have no issues qualifying.
The combo guard fills the hole left behind by the departure of Eron Harris to transfer and is not only a scoring threat but a relentless defender.
WVSports.com will have more on this commitment soon.
