Best Virginia wins on walk-off three besting DuBois Dream 70-68

It was a battle but No.1 seed Best Virginia found a way to edge out No. 8 seed Dubois Dream 70-68 in the opening round of the West Virginia regional of TBT.

Kevin Jones led the way with 22 points, while newcomer Erik Stevenson had 16 points including the walk-off three-pointer to hit the Elam Ending basket.

Best Virginia jumped out to an 13-8 lead in the early going with a pair of Erik Stevenson triples and some good ball movement in the half court. The West Virginia alumni team hit five of their first eight shots from the field and had a good pace up and down.

Teyvon Myers got into the mix with a three of his own as Best Virginia held a 16-11 edge at the midway point of the first quarter. However, DuBois Dream would actually hold a 22-20 lead at the end of the first quarter with an impressive stretch of basketball.

The two teams exchanged blows into the second quarter with Best Virginia holding a 36-35 lead at the half and Kevin Jones leading the way with 14 points by shooting 6-7 from the field. It was a rusty first half for Best Virginia with 10 turnovers, which Dubois Dream turned into 11 points of their own.

Jones continued his strong play into the second half with six straight points to move ahead 44-38 with 4:34 left in the third quarter. The Hall of Fame Mountaineers forward continued to have his way getting to 22 points with just over two minutes left in quarter.

The biggest lead for Best Virginia got to 50-42 as they found their footing but DuBois Dream did not let up cutting the advantage down to 54-52 with 6:49 left in the fourth.

The lead was down to one before a Myers three gave Best Virginia some breathing room ahead of when the Elam ending kicked into effect. But after a turnover a three cut the score to 62-all with the target score set for 70.

Stevenson would score the first points on a three-ball to put Best Virginia up by three, but DuBois would answer with a basket of their own to make it 65-64.

Best Virginia would then fall behind 66-65 after free throws and after a stop they would cut a possible win to a single possession at 67-66. DuBois would seize the lead back at 68-67 making it one possession either way to win the game in the Elam ending.

Stevenson drilled a three after a stop to walk off a win for Best Virginia to keep the dream alive in their own regional.

It's the seventh all-time win for Best Virginia in the TBT.

Best Virginia will now play the winner of Herd That and Zoo Crew at 7 p.m. Thursday night inside WesBanco Arena.
