It isn’t often that a prospect from Georgia with no real connections to the football program grows up a fan of West Virginia but that’s exactly what happened with new commitment Eugene Brown.

Brown, 6-foot, 190-pounds, first noticed the football program when Tavon Austin was causing havoc on the football field and at the time the Rivals.com three-star prospect was on the offensive side of the football. But when he got to the high school level a switch to the defensive side of the ball was in order and another West Virginia football player immediately caught his eye in safety Karl Joseph.

“I saw him when he was a freshman. I looked up to him because he’s such a hard-hitter and I knew he was going to make it big,” Brown said of the eventual first round NFL Draft pick. “That’s where my interest in West Virginia started out.”

From that minute on Brown had the goal of eventually playing for the Mountaineers but he never thought he would have the opportunity until cornerbacks coach Blue Adams offered him earlier in the spring.

From there, the assistant became a constant in his recruitment and the pair spoke on almost a daily basis building a strong bond in the process.

“I just knew I had somebody that wanted me and that’s where I wanted to go – a school that wanted me,” he said. “I have a great relationship with coach Adams and it just felt like it was home.”

While he formally committed to the football program Sunday night, Brown had been considering the possibility for quite some time and had been discussing his options with Adams. One holdup was the fact that he had yet to visit Morgantown although he had researched the program extensively.
