DJ DOLLAR spins into another season with WVU hoops

DJ Dollar will perform at every WVU home game for the remainder of the year.

If you’ve attended a home West Virginia basketball game the past couple seasons, you’ve likely noticed the DJ working hard to create some more energy in the building.

Dollar Agbemadon (ag-bay-ma-don), 24, or known better as his stage name DJ DOLLAR, is now entering his third season working as the DJ for the basketball team performing his pre-game show.

Positioned at every home game outside the tunnel near the student section, his energy-filled performances have become a staple of the game-day experience inside the Coliseum. The show begins when the doors open 90-minutes before tipoff for all of the remaining home games and feature an eclectic mix of tunes that will resonate with all ages.

“One thing I can promise is this season will be a better musical selection to suit everyone. Every single person in there is going to hear music that will make them happy,” DJ DOLLAR said.

A native of Ghana, West Africa, he arrived in the United States in December 2011 where he elected to attend West Virginia University to pursue a degree in business administration.

Because several of his friends were already attending WVU, Agbemadon decided to take a leap of faith after receiving a partial scholarship and left all he had known behind to travel across the ocean for a chance to pursue his professional dreams.

That’s when his musical career would truly blossom.

Always passionate about music since an early age, Agbemadon started interning in his native country in high school to learn how to become a DJ while working dances and other small events to refine his skills.

After moving to the states, he got his first big break after successfully handling several special events in Morgantown such as tailgates and parties. That break came when he hosted a backyard barbeque in the summer of 2013 where he was spotted by a member of the athletic marketing department for West Virginia University. It didn’t take long for a marriage between the two to ensue.

By the fall he was doing his first Gold-Blue Debut and quickly became a mainstay throughout the season providing music and energy for all of the Mountaineers home conference games. This season, he believes will be the best to date just based off his past experiences and things he learns each year.

That took some trial and error as he had to alter his performance style over the years with a focus now toward both the fans and the players, a more difficult balance than it seems.

“With everything you do you only get better over time if you put in the work,” DJ DOLLAR said. “With the feedback I’ve gotten from people and doing so many games I have a better idea and a clearer picture of every single demographic in the Coliseum.”

While he plans out his performances, DJ DOLLAR is always open to requests and loves to interact with the fan base as he works the crowd.

Professionally, DJ DOLLAR has seen his career blossom in ways he never would of expected performing in music festivals and special events nationwide while signing a contract to provide music for Georgia Tech’s football and basketball events like he does at West Virginia.

“Next month they are flying me down to Atlanta to perform live like I do in Morgantown,” he said.

DJ DOLLAR still resides in Morgantown and hopes to be around the West Virginia athletic programs for the foreseeable future. He is set to start an MBA program next summer at the school.

It’s been a wild ride for the DJ that at one point didn’t know if he would ever get a chance to do what he loved. It’s an experience he wouldn’t trade for anything.

“It’s crazy and hard to believe sometimes. There are so many cities I dreamt of visiting and now I’m not only getting the chance to visit but perform there,” he said.

But where it all started will always hold a special place in the heart of DJ DOLLAR.

“It’s always nice to be back in the Coliseum and I feel like I have a major role pumping the players up and getting the fan excited. I will always give my best for Mountaineer nation,” he said.
