Georgia RB has his eye on West Virginia

THE LATEST: Nick Chubb just impressed at the NFL Combine and he will be a high draft pick late in April. There is a new running back to know in Cedartown (Ga.). His name is Tony Mathis and he now has double-digit offers.

The 6-foot, 195 pound junior that ran for over 1,000 yards and scored 30 touchdowns in 2017 recently landed his first Power 5 offer — from West Virginia.

The Mountaineers immediately moved up his list.

IN HIS OWN WORDS: "The offer from West Virginia really came as a big surprise," said Mathis. "The first time I heard from them is when they offered me. Coach [Doug] Belk asked me to call him, so I did and he offered.

"He said that he liked my tape, they it looked very good and that I could be a good fit for them.

"It felt great to get that offer. It was a blessing and the hard work is paying off. It is a big offer, so it meant a lot to me.

"I have watched them on TV a lot and I am a big Tavon Austin fan. I like their offense, how they play fast and they get the ball to their playmakers. They get the ball to their backs in different ways and I like that.

"It is not close by, but that does not matter to me. I will go wherever I feel is most like home. I am going to try and visit this spring or summer to see what it feels like up there. I am going to look and see if it reminds me of home."

RIVALS REACTION: West Virginia is a school that is now high on Mathis' list. He grew up a Florida State fan because of Dalvin Cook, but he has not heard from the Seminoles yet. He is going to add more offers in the spring and summer, but the Mountaineers could be the team to beat at this stage. When he gets up to Morgantown, it will be a big visit for him.
