West Virginia kicked off the 2018 football recruiting class in a big way by landing Bethel Park (Pa.) lineman James Gmiter Saturday night.

Gmiter, 6-foot-4, 300-pounds, chose the Mountaineers over a scholarship offer from Wisconsin and had been receiving heavy interest from large a number of other programs including Pittsburgh, Penn State, UCLA, Syracuse and several others.

"I am now a Mountaineer for life," he tweeted.

The Rivals.com three-star prospect was offered by the Mountaineers first and had been on campus multiple times in the past several years building a strong connection with the coaching staff. He was initially offered a scholarship following a visit to Morgantown during the spring and was a regular visitor for West Virginia games this past season.

Gmiter projects as either an offensive or defensive lineman at the next level although his physicality and aggressiveness suit him on the defensive side of the ball. The Mountaineers have offered the talented prospect on the defensive side of the ball to start his career when he arrives in Morgantown.

Overall, Gmiter is the first commitment for West Virginia in the class of 2018 and recently participated in the U.S. Army All-American Combine for underclassmen.

WVSports.com will have more with Gmiter in the near future.
