No. 20 WVU basketball loses sixth straight road game, falls to Texas, 67-57

No. 20/19 West Virginia (19-9, 7-8) dropped its sixth straight road game Monday night, falling to Texas (17-11, 7-8) by a score of 67-57 in Austin.

The first basket of the game wasn’t scored until the 17:27 mark when Oscar Tshiebwe made a layup to give West Virginia an early 2-0 lead. Texas tied it up at 2-all with a jump shot from Courtney Ramey.

West Virginia and Texas each struggled offensively to start out with the two teams combining to go just 2-of-9 from the floor by the 15:41 mark with the Mountaineers leading, 3-2.

A three-point play from Tshiebwe helped West Virginia take a 6-4 lead, but the Longhorns went on a 13-0 run with all 13 points coming from Andrew Jones. This run gave Texas a 17-6 lead with 10:43 left until halftime.

Chase Harler ended the Texas run with a jumper and the Mountaineers climbed back into the game with a 12-2 run that trimmed their deficit down to a point at 19-18.

But the Longhorns would answer back and extended their lead to 27-18 with an 8-0 run. Sean McNeil then made his third three-pointer of the game to end the run and bring West Virginia to within six points.

Back-and-forth action ensued and after a three-pointer from Ramey and basket from Derek Culver, the score was 34-28 at halftime in favor of Texas.

Jermaine Haley made a layup to cut the Texas lead down to four less than a minute into the second half. The two teams went back-and-forth again, but the Longhorns would take a nine-point lead at the 13:45 mark after Ramey’s second three-pointer of the half.

Four points from Tshiebwe made it a five-point game in favor of Texas, but the Longhorns answered back again with a three-pointer from Jones to extend their lead to eight points at 49-41.

Texas continued to answer each West Virginia basket and run and led by a score of 56-46 with 6:12 remaining in the game after a basket from Matt Coleman. The Mountaineers cut their deficit down to seven points several times during the half and the Longhorns again found a way to extend their lead at the 2:18 mark with a jumper from Ramey.

This basket put Texas ahead by nine points which was followed by a dunk from Culver to once again make it a seven-point game.

Time would run out for West Virginia as Texas eventually sealed the upset win with free throws.

The Mountaineers will return to Morgantown to host Oklahoma Saturday at 4 p.m. ET.
