Numbers and Notes: West Virginia football vs. Oklahoma State

West Virginia lost consecutive games for the first time this season after falling 48-3 4 at home to Oklahoma State. WVSports.com takes a look at some of the advanced statistics to get a snap shot of the game as well as the season moving forward.

Rivals.com has partnered with PPF and we look at some of their data to review the game and different positions groups.


QUARTERBACK:

--Redshirt junior quarterback Garrett Greene completed just 15-30 throws but three of those were considered excellent passes with both ball location and timing down the field. A total of 12 of those completions traveled for first downs.

--On average Greene had 3.40 seconds to throw the football.

--The average depth of target for Greene was 14.4.

--All but 2 of Greene's throws were completed between the numbers.

--On passes thrown over 20+ yards, Greene connected on 5-8 attempts for 166 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. On the season, Greene has completed 16-33 such passes for 613 yards with 7 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

--Greene was under pressure on a total of 12 of his 36 dropbacks. In those 12, Greene completed just 2-8 passes for 32 yards and an interception.

--Oklahoma State on blitzed Greene on 11 dropbacks and he completed just 2-9 passes for 24 yards with an interception.

--Greene was effective in play-action completing 6-10 passes on 13 drop backs for 76 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

--The Mountaineers attempted only two screen passes which resulted in 1 catch for 2 yards.

RUSHING:

--A total of 115 of the 229 rushing yards came after contact. Overall the Mountaineers averaged 3.03 yards after contact in the game. But if you take out Garrett Greene's production, the running back room had 111 yards rushing and 61 yards after contact.

--CJ Donaldson rushed 13 times for 39 yards with a long run of 7 yards and did not force a missed tackle in the game.

--As a team, the Mountaineers forced only 5 missed tackles when running the ball.

--A total of 15 carries traveled for a first down.

--Garrett Greene had 118 rushing yards, more than the running back room combined, with a near even split of 58 of that coming on scrambles and 60 on designed runs.


RECEIVING:

--West Virginia targeted the tight end 6 times and that resulted in 2 catches for 8 yards. The position has been targeted 29 times for 243 yards over the first seven games and has already surpassed the 15 catches for 153 yards last season on 24 targets as the tight end has been a bigger part of the offense.

--West Virginia targeted the running back 2 times and it resulted in 2 catches for 11 yards.

--Devin Carter led the team in targets with 7 and turned that into 3 catches for 54 yards and a touchdown. He spent 31 of his 32 pass routes in the slot.

--The Mountaineers had just 52 of their 246 yards after the catch.

--West Virginia forced just one missed tackle from Traylon Ray.

--The Mountaineers did not make any of their four contested catches.

--EJ Horton hauled in 3 of his 4 targets for 39 yards and a touchdown. Horton only played a total of 20 snaps and ran 11 routes in an efficient effort.


BLOCKING:

--West Virginia quarterbacks were kept clean on 24 of 36 dropbacks in this game. That is the lowest percentage over the past several games.

--In the gap between the center and the right guard the Mountaineers turned 3 carries into 35 yards, while running behind the right guard it was 24 yards on 2 carries. Off the right end and left end those totals were a combined 10 carries for 52 yards.

--In the gap between the center and left guard West Virginia rushed 7 times for 11 yards or just 1.6 yards per carry in this contest.

--Wyatt Milum led the way in pass blocking with a grade of 90.6 and didn't allow any pressure on 97.2 percent of his 35 opportunities.

--Zach Frazier led the way on the line at run blocking at 59.6 on 39 snaps, while EJ Horton was tops overall at 80.0 across 9 such snaps.


DEFENSE:

--On 38 passing drop backs, West Virginia blitzed 10 times which resulted in Oklahoma State completing 6-10 passes for 26 yards and a touchdown.

--West Virginia missed 10 total tackles. That's now 41 missed tackles over the past three games for the defense.

--A total of 86 of the 210 passing yards came after the catch.

--Beanie Bishop was targeted 12 times, but allowed just 6 catches for 56 yards with a pass breakup.

--Marcis Floyd was targeted 4 times with Oklahoma State completing each for 44 yards and a touchdown.

----Anthony Wilson recorded an interception, but allowed all four of the other instances he was targeted to be completed for 28 yards.
