Smith is the sixth commitment for West Virginia.

West Virginia received its third commitment in the last four days Tuesday when Ligonier (Pa.) Ligonier Valley safety Collin Smith selected the Mountaineers during an unofficial visit.

Smith, 6-foot, 195-pounds, choose West Virginia over offers from Michigan, Louisville, Boston College, Connecticut, Colorado State and a number of others programs. The Mountaineers first jumped into the picture for the Rivals.com two-star prospect in February when they extended a scholarship offer.

"I actually just committed!" he informed WVSports.com

From there the 6-foot, 197-pounder, made his first visit to campus in March for the junior day and was impressed with everything he saw during that trip. Safeties coach Matt Caponi has served as the lead recruiter for the versatile athlete and built a strong bond with him over time.

“I was really comfortable with the coaches at West Virginia. More so than some other universities,” he said. “Coach Caponi and I have been in touch a lot.”

Smith visited West Virginia once again Tuesday and formally ended his recruitment becoming the become the sixth commitment for the football program in the class of 2017.

The versatile prospect can play at either the SPUR, strong or free safety positions in the West Virginia defense and paid particularly close attention to how he would be used during his visit during the spring. The Pennsylvania product excels in run support and has a nose for the ball which is evident on film. He is slated to begin his career at free.

Overall, Smith joins recent commitment Stone Mountain (Ga.) Stephenson safety Eugene Brown as the second safety in the current cycle and is the third defensive back overall.

WVSports.com will have more with Smith.
