Stills flips to WVU

Stills has committed to West Virginia.

It came a little later than expected but Fairmont (W.Va.) defensive lineman Darius Stills got the scholarship offer he was waiting for and committed to West Virginia.

Stills, 6-foot-2, 280-pounds, had committed to Rutgers over the weekend following a visit to campus but West Virginia extended a scholarship offer Monday afternoon causing him to reconsider his position. The son of former pass-rushing great Gary, Stills grew up around the Mountaineers football program and made it no secret that playing there was a life-long dream.

After talking things over with his family, Stills made the decision to first decommit from Rutgers and then take the Mountaineers up on their scholarship offer fulfilling a childhood dream. The decision also gave him an option much closer to home so his family could see him play, which was equally as imporant to Stills.

“I want to stay home and represent my state. I’ve always wanted this,” he said.

The Rivals.com two-star prospect also held offers from Rutgers, Kent State, Akron, Appalachian State and Liberty as well as receiving interest from North Carolina, Pittsburgh and multiple others. Stills is being targeted as a three-technique in the West Virginia defense.

Defensive coordinator Tony Gibson informed Stills of the scholarship offer over the telephone Monday and immediately the in-state prospect was torn on how to proceed.

“He told me that I have an offer with them if I decide to change my mind,” he said.

A frequent visitor to campus, Stills participated in multiple one-day camps in Morgantown over the past two seasons and was back in town for the Showtime Event in late July.

Stills becomes the 13th commitment for West Virginia and is the second defensive lineman to select the Mountaineers behind Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances defensive lineman Marcus Coleman. He also becomes the second in-state prospect to select West Virginia behind Morgantown linebacker Maverick Wolfley.

WVSports.com will have more with Stills in the near future.
