The Pre-Snap Read: Virginia Tech
As part of our continued efforts to expand our West Virginia coverage, WVSports.com brings you the Pre-Snap Read. In this feature, we break down the position groups for both teams and assign which has the edge at each individual position spot prior to matchup and then look at the two against one another.
Today we look at the tale of the tape of the positions for both West Virginia and season opening opponent Virginia Tech to see which team in our analysis comes out on top position by position and pitted against each other.
QUARTERBACK:
West Virginia will start redshirt junior Will Grier, a Florida transfer that has been the talk of the Mountaineers program almost from the moment he elected to call Morgantown his home. In six games with the Gators, Grier threw for over 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns while leading his team to an undefeated mark. However, a year-long suspension for a banned substance resulted in Grier looking for a new home and eventually ended up with the Mountaineers. Throughout fall camp, Grier has been praised not only for his arm strength and accuracy but his overall leadership abilities. The Big 12 Conference Pre-Season Newcomer of the Year pick has all the makings of a potential breakout campaign with the program this fall and it’s one spot the Mountaineers can’t afford to lose.
On the other hand, Virginia Tech’s starter will be making his first collegiate appearance in redshirt freshman Josh Jackson. A one-time West Virginia recruit, Jackson is originally from Michigan and is a dual-threat option that has reportedly impressed with his ability to handle the offense and make his reads. However, even with six games of experience that is more than never seeing the field.
Coming into this game there is no question who gets the edge in this department from our viewpoint.
