Tight end TJ Ivy commits to West Virginia

West Virginia picked up a major commitment Friday when Chicago (Ill.) Marist tight end TJ Ivy selected the Mountaineers following an unofficial visit.

Ivy, 6-foot-5, 220-pounds, took an unofficial visit to Morgantown and saw enough to end his recruitment picking the Mountaineers over the remainder of his top four Illinois, Iowa and Indiana.

The Rivals.com three-star prospect developed a close bond with Dan Gerberry throughout the process and also spoke with offensive coordinator Jake Spavital. It was Spavital that visited the talented tight end multiple times during the spring evaluation period.

Ivy was offered by the Mountaineers during the spring and immediately was excited over the possibility of playing in the up-tempo offense.

“He’s told me that I’d fit in perfectly with how they play and they wouldn’t have to sub with me in there. I can run routes, block and catch the ball to create matchup problems,” he said. “I love that style.”

West Virginia is targeting the versatile athlete as a tight end with the ability to move all around the formation and fill multiple roles.

Overall, Ivy is the sixth commitment for West Virginia in the 2018 class and represents the second tight end pledge behind Oak Park (Ill.) Fenwick tight end Mike O'Laughlin.

WVSports.com will have more with Ivy in the near future.
