West Virginia looks to flush Houston game, move forward

Sometimes you just need to move onto the next one.

That is certainly the case for West Virginia following an 89-55 road loss to Houston to open Big 12 Conference play. It was a one-sided affair with the Cougars scoring 48-points in the paint and shooting 53-percent from the floor.

On the opposite side, the Mountaineers were held to just 32-percent as the Houston defense forced them into difficult situations.

It’s the type of performance that reminds Eilert of what unfolded last season on the road at Texas in a 94-60 loss. Eilert was an assistant on that team but much like what unfolded against the Longhorns, the Cougars dominated that contest from basically start to finish.

“You almost feel like you ran into a buzz saw,” Eilert said.

The challenge now is for West Virginia to learn what they can from what unfolded before flushing the game and preparing for what’s next. Last season’s game against Texas didn’t derail that team so the Mountaineers will need to put this game behind them in short order.

“You have to figure out what you can learn and learn quickly and then turn the page,” Eilert said.

West Virginia is now 5-9 on the season and the focus will be on improving the overall shot selection with better ball movement along with more communication and effort on defense.

One of the major issues against Houston is simply the fact that the Mountaineers have to be able to take the game plan that they practiced and apply it to the court during game situations.

That was a major problem in the loss to the Cougars which led to issues in execution.

Next up for West Virginia is a home contest for Kansas State and while the Mountaineers certainly can play better than they did Saturday there are a lot of issues that need to be cleaned up. Still, after what unfolded against the Cougars the focus is on moving forward with the season.

“We have to be more disciplined,” Eilert said.
