Naples (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas 2027 quarterback Derrick Baker made his first trip to West Virginia wanting to learn more about the program but left with a scholarship offer from the Mountaineers.

Baker, 6-foot-1, 170-pounds, found out about the good news from quarterbacks coach Tyler Allen who informed him after he completed his tour of the facilities.

It was the perfect cap to an impressive visit.

“The visit was amazing. I loved the staff, stadium and everything about the place was great,” he said.

One of the things that stood out the most to Baker was the way that everything associated with the players is closely connected and all in one spot.

Baker was able to also work with Allen on the field, which is something that certainly made a positive impression seeing how he handled his quarterbacks on the grass.

“Working with Coach Allen was great. I enjoyed the drills he did and just the atmosphere,” he said.

The West Virginia coaching staff was impressed with Baker’s athleticism as well as his ability to get the ball out both clean and quickly. He also displayed a strong arm which was able to get the ball downfield with accuracy which is appealing to college coaches.

Baker has been busy this summer going to places such as Georgia, Auburn, UCF, Mississippi State, Maryland and Wake Forest. There is no return date for another stop in Morgantown but it’s something he is interested in doing in order to learn even more about the school.

“I definitely think I will be back to West Virginia at some point in the future,” he said.

Baker has plenty of time to sort through a possible decision but wants to eventually find a place that feels like a family and where he will be able to play the sport he wants to at a high level.

“But also have brothers around me that I can respect and have fun with,” he said.
