Woods has committed to West Virginia.

West Virginia received a commitment at a position of need from a familiar location Saturday when Scranton (Pa.) Lackawanna College cornerback Alex Woods pledged to the Mountaineers.

Woods, 6-foot-3, 180-pounds, visited Morgantown over the weekend and elected to end his recruitment by selecting West Virginia bypassing offers from North Carolina State, East Carolina, Troy, Sacred Heart and several other programs in the process.

“I loved it and committed,” he informed WVSports.com.

The North Carolina native received his second offer from the Mountaineers and has listed the Big 12 Conference program among his top schools since initially receiving an offer. Assistant Mark Scott served as the lead recruiter for Woods and he was impressed with the football program overall.

Woods originally signed with Old Dominion out of high school but failed to qualify academically.

He will have three years to play two at the next level after graduating in December and is the latest prospect to trickle to Morgantown from Lackawanna following in the footsteps of prospects such as Kevin White, Mark Glowinski, Josh Francis, Ka’Raun White, Trevon Wesco and Kyzir White in recent years.

Given his overall length, Woods has the ability to lineup at cornerback or safety at the next level although he will begin his career at West Virginia at the cornerback spot.

Woods becomes the fourth overall commitment for West Virginia in the class of 2017 and the first pledge in the defensive backfield following prior commitments from Morgantown (W.Va.) linebacker Maverick Wolfley, New Orleans (La.) Landry-Walker athlete Tevin Bush and Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage running back Alec Sinkfield.

WVSports.com will have more with Woods.
