Comfort level for WVU positions?

SUBSCRIBE today to stay up on the latest in Mountaineer sports and recruiting.

West Virginia’s season is approaching slowly but surely and WVSports.com takes a look at the pick for the most concerning and comforting position on the roster heading into fall camp.

Which position gives the most cause for concern while which one do you put the most faith in as the off-season marches on. And we break down our reasoning why for each choice on both sides of the ball.

So which position gets the nod?

Today the most comforting on each side.

Most comforting offense:

This one could have gone two different ways with both positions on the offensive side in the running directly connected at quarterback and wide receiver. But after breaking it down and examining each I elected to ultimately give the choice to the quarterback position. Yes, injuries are a concern but much like last year if redshirt senior Will Grier goes down it’s likely going to hurt the entire team from top to bottom. Still, I believe that the reserves are in a much better place to help this season than they were a year ago with Jack Allison and Trey Lowe making significant strides.

As for Grier, this will be year two in the system which almost always signifies a massive jump for signal callers in this system. He was already on pace for a massive season prior to breaking his finger last year and should be even better with the focus squarely on improving with efficiency and getting into the right plays at the line of scrimmage. Grier could very well be the best quarterback In all of the Big 12 and perhaps nationally and the offense could at the top of all the land with him running the show.

Most comforting defense:

This one is perhaps the easiest pick I’ll make because truthfully it’s the only position on that side of the ball without any major question marks entering the season. What position? Well if you haven’t guessed it by now, it’s at safety where the program returns almost the entire cupboard of talent from a year ago sans SPUR safety Kyzir White who is off to the NFL. But the Mountaineers return the rest of the its starters as well as several key reserves pieces as the program has shuffled around its makeup there. There could even be turnover considering how much players have impressed.

The only questions at safety are the fact that West Virginia is going to have to figure out who plays where and which reserves emerge to the forefront with others pushing for time such as junior college prospect Josh Norwood. There is depth, talent and a lot more here and the coaches can rest easy.
