When Morgantown (W.Va.) University 2019 safety Amir Richardson woke up Wednesday morning he had zero scholarship offer but by the end of the day that number was up to two.

Richardson, 6-foot-2, 200-pounds, first picked up an offer from West Virginia in the morning after defensive coordinator Tony Gibson stopped by the school.

Marshall then followed with an offer later in the day giving him two in total.

The son of former Mountaineers player Tony, the younger Richardson was literally speechless when he was given the news about his home-town team giving him a scholarship.

“It was just overwhelming. I couldn’t even speak,” he said. “It was just a complete shock with me being an in-state kid and West Virginia being my first offer right off the bat. It was my dream school growing up and they offered me before anybody else. It’s a great feeling.”

“I grew up watching them and my dad went there. It’s a family thing,” he added.

West Virginia is targeting him for the defensive side of the ball as either a safety or outside linebacker depending on how he develops and that is an intriguing option to the in-state prospect.

The natural question given his ties to the football program is what’s next? And while Richardson admits that West Virginia and the fact they offered first will hold a special place in his heart moving forward, he understands by watching his older brother go through the process that time is on his side.

So he plans to take his time in sorting out his college options.

“Everybody at school was asking me since I’m from Morgantown and West Virginia offered if I was committing already but I’m going to take my time and visit schools,” he said.

Richardson plans to make a camp visit to Pittsburgh June 4 followed by a camp visit to West Virginia June 22 and also is looking into making a summer stop at Marshall. The Thundering Herd also have his interest after extending a scholarship offer.

The 2019 prospect has seen his recruitment take off in a big way since a standout performance at the Rivals Camp in Columbus where he put in a 4.6 40-yard dash to go along with a 40-inch vertical leap.

That coupled with his college ready size is a recipe for college coaches to show interest.

“When I got invited to that camp it opened up some doors for me,” he said.
