West Virginia landed another important piece to the 2018 recruiting class puzzle when Lorton (Va.) South County wide receiver Dillon Spalding committed to the Mountaineers.

Spalding, 6-foot-2, 210-pounds, had previously narrowed his choices down to West Virginia and Michigan but ultimately elected to cast his lot with the Mountaineers. The big, athletic wide receiver made multiple visits to Morgantown including for the Texas Tech game in mid-October.

Tide started to turn in favor of West Virginia during a visit in June when Spalding was initially set to take a trip to East Carolina but ended up in Morgantown.

There he was given a complete plan for how the coaching staff wanted to use him across the formation and highlight his skills in the red zone.

The Rivals.com three-star prospect was recruited by running backs coach Tony Dews and the two developed a close bond early in the process that only continued to blossom. In West Virginia, Spalding found a place where he was comfortable as well as an offense that would get him the football.

The Rivals.com three-star prospect held offers from a number of other programs including Tennessee, Virginia Tech, North Carolina State, Rutgers, Syracuse, Virginia, Indiana, Wake Forest and several others.

After trimming down his list to a top two, Spalding didn’t wait too long to make his college choice announcing in favor of the Mountaineers.

He is set to take his official visit to Morgantown during the Dec. 8 weekend.

As a junior, Spalding hauled in 67 passes for 1,069 yards and 14 touchdowns and has the ability to line up at several of the wide receiver spots in the Mountaineers spread offensive attack.

Spalding becomes the first player from Virginia to pick the Mountaineers since Gary Jennings did during the 2015 cycle giving West Virginia a versatile prospect from an area that has been difficult to crack.

Overall, Spalding continues a run for West Virginia on the recruiting trail becoming the 22nd overall pledge for the Mountaineers in this cycle and the fourth wide receiver behind Holly Springs (N.C.) wide receiver Bryce Wheaton, Richmond Hill (Ga.) wide receiver Sam James and Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances wide receiver Randy Fields.

WVSports.com will have more with Spalding in the near future.
