The anchor of West Virginia’s infield has been told to look for a new opportunity.

Tyler Doanes, the team’s starting second baseman over the previous three seasons, confirmed Tuesday that he had entered the NCAA transfer portal.

Doanes told WVSports.com that West Virginia told him the program “didn’t have a scholarship for me anymore and I should seek something else.”

Doanes, who will be playing in his fifth collegiate season next spring, is a career .289 hitter with 38 stolen bases. His strongest season was in 2019, when he hit .316 with 21 doubles as well as 20 stolen bases in 59 games.

He regressed a bit coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, hitting .225 in 40 games during the 2021 season.

This summer, Doanes has been playing with the Frederick Keys of the MLB Draft League.

He said that he would be open to return to WVU if room opens up, but otherwise Doanes is just looking for an opportunity to play.

A native of Fayetteville, Georgia, Doanes was the No. 45 overall player from the state in the class of 2017.
