Spartanburg (S.C.) kicker Will Fowler is entering the recruiting process with an open mind but an opportunity at West Virginia certainly has his attention.

Fowler, 6-foot-0, 180-pounds, already has scholarship offers from Army and Air Force while a number of other programs have expressed interest such as West Virginia, Clemson, Tennessee, North Carolina, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech and Appalachian State.

The Mountaineers have been in touch with Fowler since February and have discussed with him the possibility of joining the team to compete for a scholarship.

Fowler has been in contact with special teams coordinator Jeff Koonz as well as hearing from analyst Tyler Hancock and graduate assistant Troy Porter. Each have made a positive impression on him at this stage of the process, although it is very early in the process.

“I really like the coaches. They are honest and that’s something I look for in a coach,” he said.

The Mountaineers, along with the other schools in the mix, want Fowler to handle kickoffs as well as field goals with programs impressed with his operational speed, character and confidence. Fowler possesses impressive range on his attempts and drives the ball deep and with hang time on kickoffs.

The coaches have discussed Fowler coming on a visit to Morgantown once the dead period is lifted and that is something that he plans on doing.

“I’m interested in the program and want to visit as soon as the dead period is lifted,” he said.

Fowler has already visited Clemson, North Carolina, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Georgia, Georgia Tech, North Carolina State and several others. He is hoping to make it to many others once the dead period ends in order to see all of his options on the table.

The specialist plans to graduate in December in order to enroll at the school he eventually selects at the mid-term and is excited to showcase what he can do.

“I want to have the chance to prove myself early,” he said.
