Leesburg (Va.) Tuscarora 2024 athlete Jonah Ulloa knew from the first time he visited West Virginia that it was the place he wanted to spend his college career.
So, when the 6-foot-3, 250-pounder, received a preferred walk-on opportunity with the Mountaineers it didn’t take him long to make up his mind.
“I chose West Virginia because every time I was there it felt like home. I love the environment of the school and the fans,” he said.
Tight ends coach Blaine Stewart served as the lead recruiter for Ulloa and the connection between the pair helped to pave the way for his eventual decision. Stewart has remained in constant contact with Ulloa throughout the course of the process and he also developed a close bond with AJ Jackson.
Ulloa visited West Virginia on four separate occasions including for a camp and while he has been to a number of places his experience in Morgantown stands out above all others.
"The football facilities at West Virginia are the best I’ve seen. Coach (Mike) Joseph gave a strong presentation about the training facility and the science behind it and that stuck with me,” he said.
Ulloa is relatively new to the game of football as he just started playing during his freshman year in high school after making the transition over from basketball. While Ulloa has played both tight end and defensive end at the high school level, West Virginia is looking at him at outside linebacker.
That also is where he worked out at the camp this past summer.
“Coach Lesley was really happy with how I did with it,” he said.
Ulloa plans to enroll at West Virginia in the summer but is excited to have his recruitment behind him and can now look forward to what college life will be like in Morgantown.
“It feels amazing to be a Mountaineer!” he said.
