As WVSports.com does leading up to the season, we take a look at what we project the West Virginia depth chart to look like in 2022.
With the early signing period, early enrollment, the late signing day, spring practice and summer in the books we look at how the depth chart on offense projects heading into the season.
This is the third edition.
QUARTERBACK:
There will be three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster, but this is really a two-man race between Greene and Marchiol. The two saw time last season and now will square off for the right to take the reins at the position. It is certainly possible that both are given opportunities in 2023 but right now, Greene gets the early edge due to his experience last season. Still, this is more on an 'or' situation at this point.
RUNNING BACK:
This is one of the deepest positions on the entire team and this doesn't even include the two freshmen that the Mountaineers have added in the 2023 recruiting class. Order isn't as important here because you can expect West Virginia to utilize all three of the running backs at various times like you saw last season. CJ Donaldson is going to have a great chance to follow up after a strong freshman season and the same can be said for the way Jaylen Anderson finished things at the end of the year and Johnson is reliable commodity in the backfield.
TIGHT END:
West Virginia has some other options at this position but these should be the top two options on the roster heading into spring football. Davis has the most experience at West Virginia but is primarily a blocking tight end that has shown the ability to catch the ball in short areas. Taylor is more of a pass catching threat given his 6-foot-7 frame that the Mountaineers aggressively pursued in the transfer portal.
X WIDE RECEIVER:
Z WIDE RECEIVER:
INSIDE WR:
No position on the entire roster will look as different as wide receiver by the time that season rolls around. West Virginia targeted a large number of pass catchers in the transfer portal and despite some returning options from a season ago there is still plenty of work that needs to be done. The Mountaineers have some talent at the starting spots and have added Devin Carter, EJ Horton and Ja'Shaun Poke to bring more speed and experience outside and in the slot. The Mountaineers also have Preston Fox on the outside to help add depth as well. The work here is only just beginning as the Mountaineers fill out the wide receiver room.
LEFT TACKLE:
LEFT GUARD:
CENTER:
RIGHT GUARD:
RIGHT TACKLE:
West Virginia returns the entire first unit on the offensive line which should be a major strength for the 2023 offense. The issue is going to be developing depth behind them moving forward as there are some talented players but they lack overall experience. This is another position that could be further addressed through the transfer portal.
