The Mountaineers did not qualify for the NCAA Tournament and was passed over for 32 other teams by the NIT selection committee. It was always a longshot to be selected for the NIT with a losing record but given the strength of the overall resume when it comes to key metrics the door was at least somewhat cracked open.
