In late September, West Virginia had just thoroughly beaten rival Virginia Tech on the road by the largest margin that the Mountaineers had ever won by inside Lane Stadium.

It was an obvious high point for the program after a difficult start and despite the noticeable struggles of the rebuilding Hokies the performance led to optimism for the rest of the schedule.
