This off-season for the West Virginia basketball program has had a lot of twists and turns with the most recent taking the coaching staff overseas to fill a roster slot.
The Mountaineers added forward Ofri Naveh from Israel to the roster after casting out a wide net to see what all was out there at this late stage of the process.
The 6-foot-7 forward is one of at least half a dozen prospects from various international countries to be contacted by the program as the coaching staff looks to address any holes on the roster.
Naveh is an interesting piece considering his overall versatility and the multitude of things he can do.
Despite being a forward, Naveh can handle the basketball displaying the ability to put it on the floor and get to the rim. The Israel native is especially impressive when it comes to finishing around the rim either off the bounce or on a rebound.
He has excellent length, as you would expect at his size, and displays the ability to change or block shots as well on the defensive end.
Naveh has the range to hit shots at all three levels including deep and while there could be an adjustment to the college game Naveh has gone against high level players.
Essentially, Naveh has the skill set of a guard in the body of a forward which makes him an intriguing addition considering that and when he is being added to the roster.
Naveh played this past season at Maccabi Tel Aviv U18 and became an interesting late addition target for a number of schools given his skill set and size.
Along with West Virginia, Naveh received offers or interest from Marquette, Butler, Wake Forest and a number of others.
It’s a unique addition in the sense that it’s from the international waters after there was a major focus on the transfer portal at first to fill those needs. But assistant coach Da'Sean Butler served as the lead recruiter in the process to help move things along.
This might not be the last as the program continues to explore options and cast a wide net in order to fill out the roster and address primary concerns heading into the season.
Along with Naveh, the Mountaineers also have expressed interest or made contact with forward Ibrahim Mohamed (Egypt), forward Mintautas Mockus (Lithuania) and center Victory Onuetu (Spain) and center Abdullah Ahmed (Egypt).
The addition of Naveh is the third for the program since Josh Eilert was given the role of interim head coach behind Florida State point guard Jeremiah Bembry and St. John's forward Quinn Slazinski. The Mountaineers were also able to keep Jose Perez.
West Virginia is now up to 12 scholarship players for next year as the roster has started to come together with a need in the front court left to fill.
