Wilbraham (Ma.) Wilbraham and Monson Academy 2026 forward Sam Fleming knows what he wants to find in a basketball program when the time comes.

He’s interested in seeing how West Virginia matches those criteria.

Fleming, 6-foot-7, 205-pounds, received a scholarship offer from West Virginia in late September after assistant Kory Barnett gave him the news. The Mountaineers had been watching the four-star forward since the summer and made things official by jumping into the mix.

“Coach Barnett said they play an open system where it’s just play freely,” he said.

The nation’s No. 76 ranked prospect, Fleming is still finding things out about the Mountaineers basketball program but does want to make a visit at some point to get a look at things in person.

The West Virginia coaching staff has been impressed with the fact that Fleming is a good passer for his size as well as his ability to rebound the basketball at a high clip.

“And that my IQ is really high, and I can see the whole floor at a high level,” he said.

Fleming has yet to take any visits at this stage of his recruitment but does want to see a number of schools throughout the course of his recruitment on top of a planned visit to see Morgantown.

Fleming wants to find a program that is family-oriented with a strong culture and will prioritize him on and off the floor in order to make him feel comfortable. While the basketball piece is important, feeling at home ranks even higher on his list of qualities that will guide him to an eventual decision.

“I told Coach Barnett this as well and he said West Virginia is really good at treating players like a family which I loved to hear,” he said.
