West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez has always felt that one of his best characteristics on the practice field is what he describes as fast eyes.
And it makes sense considering his experience, the veteran coach knows what he is looking for out of his players so it’s easy for him to identify it.
“I know what it’s supposed to look like. So, I recognize it quicker,” he said.
But Rodriguez has been doing this long enough that he understands the importance of allowing his assistant coaches to recognize and have a strong voice with the players as well.
So while he wants his coaches to take a more active role when they see something that would be considered soft, Rodriguez also has to give them a chance to do so.
“It’s my fault because I’ll jump in the middle of it and start getting on somebody before they have a chance to,” he said.
Rodriguez understands that it’s something that he has to scale back some in order to allow the coaching staff to understand the things that he wants out of his players but much like the staff and players are adjusting it takes an effort on his part as well.
“I need to not do that all the time, but I can't promise that I won't,” he said.
Even with a larger coaching staff due to changes in the rules, there is an adjustment period for all involved because everybody involved had to jump straight into putting a roster together through the transfer portal and then spring football.
That is something that will be further addressed in May and June where Rodriguez can lock everybody into what their roles and duties are on the staff.
But Rodriguez is confident in his talented coaching staff and while they are constantly meeting, that will take a step further when they can go through the whole program and everybody’s responsibilities.
“So I think you can have too many because they get too many voices. But it's shaping up good for us,” Rodriguez said.
