Naz Long also added 15 points while hitting five of seven shots from beyond the arc. Every time, the Mountaineers pulled within reach of the Cyclones, Long hit a big shot for Iowa State.
West Virginia trailed by just six at the beginning of the second half, but to start off the period, Iowa State scored five straight points to take a 44-33 lead over WVU. After a few nice defensive stops and conversions on offense the Mountaineers were able to cut the Iowa State lead to just 48-42.
But there was Long. He hit a three pointer to put the Cyclones ahead 51-42 with 14:52 to play.
Again WVU built a comeback. Remi Dibo hit a three pointer to pull within just four points, but Long fired back with one of his own to put Iowa State up 56-49.
From there Iowa State never really looked back. Fred Hoiberg's team got solid contributions from DeAndre Kane and Dustin Hogue. Kane registered 17 points and grabbed 9 boards while Hogue scored 15 points and added 8 rebounds.
West Virginia was led by Juwan Staten, he scored 18 points in the loss.
The majority of the first half was dominated by Iowa State. What started out as a back and forth affair, quickly turned in favor of Iowa State.
Behind Niang, the Cyclones were able to have success offensively. Niang had 15 of his 24 points in the first half. 10 of those points came from inside the paint after a few easy put backs and fancy hooks shots. He also hit a shot from three-point range that put Iowa State ahead of West Virginia 17-11 with 11:08 to play in the first half.
Niang, who fouled out in the previous match up between the two teams, served as a catalyst for Fred Hoiberg's offense Wednesday night. After his first converted basket, Long hit a pair of three-point attempts while Kane hit a jumper and three-pointer in the first ten minutes.
Frustration started to boil for WVU as Bob Huggins received a technical at the 9:33 mark of the game. Iowa State took advantage hitting the free throws that followed.
Thirty second later at the 9:03 mark of the first half, the Cyclones doubled up the Mountaineers taking a 28-14 lead.
Then WVU freshman center Devin Williams threw down a two-handed jam to ignite the Mountaineers. WVU went on a 12-2 run and cut the Iowa State lead to just six points.
Iowa State then used a three-pointer from Kane at the 2:40 mark to regain a double-digit lead.
West Virginia returns to action on Saturday against TCU in Morgantown at the Coliseum. Tip time is set for 1:30 PM.
