North Alabama transfer offensive lineman Mickel Clay knew that West Virginia was where he wanted to spend his final season at the college level.
So, he decided there was no reason to wait any longer and committed to the football program.
“I loved everything about the school, the tradition and the entire coaching staff,” he said.
Clay, 6-foot-5, 278-pounds, visited Morgantown April 9-10 and on the trip instantly felt at home. In fact, it was during that trip that he had made up his mind on where he wanted to play next.
“I felt in my heart it was the best decision for me and the program,” he said.
Offensive line coach Jack Bicknell served as the lead recruiter for him but he also got to know many of the other members of the offensive coaching staff throughout the process.
“The entire offensive staff played a part in my recruitment. Excellent relationships and always checking on me and letting me know they want what’s best for me,” he said. “They didn’t push my decision.”
Clay spent three seasons at North Alabama after spending time at a junior college and started all 12 games for the Lions last season. He appeared across 792 snaps at right tackle and the Mountaineers also are targeting him to play the offensive tackle spot.
“They told me they loved my game and the way I play at a high level along with my athleticism being the size that I am,” he said.
Now, Clay is excited for the next step in his career and joining the West Virginia football team.
“Let’s go win some football games,” he said.
