Scranton (Pa.) Lackawanna College cornerback Alex Woods had been considering ECU due to his ties to the program but after a visit to West Virginia decided that Morgantown was where he wanted to spend the rest of his college career.

Woods, 6-foot-2, 180-pounds, had been talking with the West Virginia coaches for quite some time and elected to take an unofficial visit over the weekend. That visit was enough for the junior college cornerback to end his recruitment in favor of the Mountaineers.

“I had been thinking about it for a while and I visited and I loved it,” he said.

Originally from North Carolina, Woods had built a bond with the West Virginia coaching staff and after speaking with both head coach Dana Holgorsen as well as cornerbacks coach Blue Adams he decided that he has seen enough and was prepared to end his recruitment.

“Coach Holgorsen was happy about it. He stood up and gave me a big handshake and a hug. Coach Blue Adams was talking to me in the meeting room and he said you have to come here and ball out,” he said.

Woods will enroll at West Virginia in December and felt as if he was a priority in the Mountaineers recruiting class because of the need for cornerbacks in this cycle.

He had paid particularly close attention to the success that junior college players have had from the Lackawanna ranks and while that didn’t make his decision, it also didn’t hurt the efforts of the Mountaineers.

“I see they’ve had a lot of Lackawanna guys. I know the struggles they’ve had in the corner department and it’s going to be a situation where I get to town and be the best I can be,” he said.

Woods is being recruited strictly as a cornerback for West Virginia and at this point is open to other schools although he doesn’t intend on changing his mind. He plans to take an official visit to ECU in September and is keeping his options open but is excited about his future in Morgantown.

“I’m 100-percent committed to West Virginia,” he said.

Woods now believes he will wear a target on his back this upcoming season and is excited to showcase what he can do in his final year at the junior college level. However, he is excited for the next step in the process to continue his career in Morgantown.

“I’m done with the recruiting process and I have a home when I come out,” he said.

Woods is the fourth commitment for West Virginia in the 2017 class and the first representative in the defensive backfield.
