Davis is a late addition to the 2017 class.

West Virginia has been in search of late additions to the 2017 recruiting class and the Mountaineers uncovered one in El Dorado (Kan.) Butler C.C. cornerback Fontez Davis.

Davis, 5-foot-11, 194-pounds, has been in contact with the coaching staff since late January but made an official visit to Morgantown over the past few days.

Defensive coordinator Tony Gibson has been the primary contact between the two parties and the cornerback and while he entered the visit without an offer from the Mountaineers that would change. And so would his commitment status.

"It's official I'm committed," he informed WVSports.com.

Davis committed to the football program after a productive official visit where he was able to get a first-hand look at what the Mountaineers had to offer and that was enough to seal the deal. WVSports.com first reported news of his official visit.

Other programs that offered Davis included Memphis and Louisiana Monroe, but he continued to hold out interest for the Big 12 Conference program once they jumped into the picture. That patience paid off for the junior college prospect.

The May graduate will have three years to play three in Morgantown.

Davis is the second late addition prospect at the cornerback spot for West Virginia since signing day after Syracuse graduate transfer Corey Winfield has already signed a letter of intent and plans to enroll this summer. He will have one year of eligibility remaining this coming fall and like Davis will be able to play immediately.

This past season Davis finished with 36 tackles, 8 pass breakups, 1 interception and a forced fumble for Butler C.C.

Overall, Davis is the 22nd commitment for the Mountaineers in the class of 2017 and third true cornerback behind Winfield and January enrollee and fellow junior college prospect Hakeem Bailey, who is currently competing in spring ball.

West Virginia is tasked with replacing four seniors at the cornerback spot from last season's roster which means it was a priority after signing day.

WVSports.com will have more with Davis in the near future.
