Following a minor setback, the Mountaineers have seemingly righted the ship.

After falling to No. 1 Gonzaga in their last time out, No. 11 West Virginia earned a 80-71 win over the Georgetown Hoyas on Sunday.

Georgetown (1-2) opened the game on an 8-2 run before the Mountaineers came charging back, but West Virginia (4-1) encountered their fair share of struggles in the first half.

Derek Culver, who entered Sunday as the Mountaineers’ top scorer and rebounder, picked up his second foul early on, sending him to the bench for the remainder of the first half. Freshman Isaiah Cottrell saw an increased role in Culver’s absence, but the void was noticed.

West Virginia shot only 31% from the field in the first half, including 23% from the 3-point line, entering halftime facing a brief 34-32 deficit.

In the second half, WVU forward Oscar Tshiebwe scored seven points en route to the Mountaineers taking the lead with slightly more than 11 minutes remaining in regulation.

Yet, the rest of the second half consisted of the two teams trading blows, and the lead moving back and forth.

With around five minutes remaining, the Mountaineers began to go on a 13-2 run, ultimately taking a commanding 71-62 lead.

Georgetown was unable to chase down the Mountaineers, losing their second game of the season.

Miles McBride led the Mountaineers in scoring, ending the afternoon with 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting in addition to 5-of-7 from the free throw line. Three others scored in double figures: Culver, Taz Sherman and Emmitt Matthews Jr.

Culver came down with nine rebounds, again leading the Mountaineers. McBride was a close second with seven.

West Virginia will return home for a tilt with Robert Morris on Wednesday. The season’s home opener for WVU, the game will tip off at 7 p.m. and be broadcast on Big 12 Now through ESPN+.
