Coach's Take: Sessions' versatility and leadership stands out

Earlier in June, West Virginia picked up the commitment of three-star defensive back Elgin Sessions.

Sessions is from Irmo (S.C.) Dutch Fork and is in the 2025 class. He stands at 6-foot-0, 170-pounds, and chose WVU over a handful of other schools including Duke, Georgia Tech, Stanford, and Wake Forest among others.

Sessions' defensive coordinator Scott Braswell praised his ability both on and off the field.

"Off the field he is a great kid from a great family. He is smart and contentious and a great leader for our football program," Braswell said. "On the field he also asserts himself as a leader and has a great standard of performance. He holds himself and his teammates to that standard and elevates the play of those around him. His skill set also allows us to do some different things schematically that make a huge difference related to the big picture of game planning and winning football games."

As far as his skillset goes, Braswell raved about his versatility, something the Mountaineers liked in Sessions during his recruitment.

"Overall strengths on the field are mostly based on the fact that he can play anywhere for us on [defense]. He is a great man coverage corner, he is smart and a great communicator at safety, and when there is a mismatch in the slot we can put him at nickel and he mitigates that match-up issue," Braswell said.

Braswell has seen Sessions evolve since his freshman year in high school, a point when Sessions first stuck out to the coaches at Irmo.

"On the 9th-grade team, he was not only the most athletic player on the defense, he also played safety and made all the calls and checks and knew the defense better than anyone else so he separated himself from everyone else in that way as well," Braswell said.

As Sessions has matured throughout high school, he's also taken on more of a leadership role. Braswell noted he sees how vocal Sessions is and that when he speaks, other guys listen.

"He is very vocal as a leader so the guys can hear him as well as see him lead. He is always the first one to rally everyone together and say when the team's execution or effort or whatever is not good enough. And the guys respond to him," Braswell said.

Sessions is part of a 2025 class that continues to trend upward. WVU's 2025 class is currently ranked 20th in the country.
