West Virginia isn’t going to settle on a depth chart this spring and that likely includes the quarterback spot as well where there are two viable candidates for the position.

The message from head coach Neal Brown has been firm to both junior quarterback Jarret Doege and senior quarterback Austin Kendall; make each better.

“They need to challenge each other to be better and really push each other to be better,” he said.

Brown was able to watch video of both quarterbacks throughout the course of the season and get an idea of where each could improve heading into this spring. The Mountaineers are going to rep both throughout the spring in order to get an idea of where they stand in the race.

Kendall started the first nine games of the season completing 187-304 passes (61.5-percent) for 1,989 yards with 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions over that span resulting in three wins.

For Doege, he was inserted into the lineup for the final three games of the year and led the Mountaineers to a pair of wins both of which came on the road. His final stat line 79-120 passes (65.8-percent) for 818 yards with 7 touchdowns and 3 interceptions over that span.

Brown wants to see the two veterans challenge each other as a way to push them in order to get the most out of each on a day-to-day basis. While the quarterbacks haven’t had a ball because spring practice has yet to start, the head coach has seen a noticeable improvement in some areas.

“They’re more comfortable with what we’re doing, fundamentally they’ve improved to me,” he said.

It will be one of the biggest storylines of the spring and one that is only just beginning to unfold.
