The West Virginia Mountaineers football program has landed a commitment from an experienced piece on the offensive front with a pledge from Mississippi State transfer Carson Lee.

Lee, 6-foot-3, 320-pounds, entered the transfer portal April 25 after spending just the spring with the Bulldogs football program and committed to the Mountaineers following a visit to campus. He also had UCLA among his top options once he entered the transfer market.

Prior to his stint at Mississippi State, Lee was at Eastern Michigan where he made starts at center, right guard and left guard for the Eagles. He started 10 games in 2024 with starts at all three interior spots.

During the 2023 campaign, Lee made six starts at center and appeared in seven total games.

Lee initially was at Colorado where he played in five games over two seasons.

Over his time at the college level, Lee has appeared across 1,124 snaps as a blocker.

Lee has one season of eligibility remaining in his career.

The Colorado native becomes the fourth offensive line commitment for West Virginia out of the transfer portal since the spring window opened joining North Alabama offensive tackle Mickel Clay, Texas offensive lineman Malik Agbo and Oklahoma interior offensive lineman Josh Aisosa.

WVSports.com breaks down the commitment of Lee and what it means to the West Virginia Mountaineers football program both now and in the future.

The data:

Lee is an experienced offensive lineman that has played over 1,124 snaps in his career between time on the field at both Eastern Michigan and Colorado. In 2024, Lee made a total of 10 starts out of the 11 total games he played with five at right guard, four at center and one at left guard showcasing his overall flexibility.

Lee played a total of 692 snaps in 2024 and displayed the versatility to bounce around making him a valuable addition given his experience at the college level. He played the most snaps at center over his career at 740 but has 276 snaps at right guard and 108 at left guard.

Lee graded out well in pass blocking across 387 reps last season according to Pro Football Focus at 73.8. Over his time on the field, Lee has allowed just one sack and has been penalized only 4 times.

Fitting the program:

West Virginia needed experience and versatility up front and Lee checks both of those boxes. This is a seasoned offensive lineman that in terms of snaps played already becomes one of the most game-used options on the entire roster to date. Lee can play any of the three spots inside which gives West Virginia options in how he could potentially be deployed up front.

The Mountaineers have been aggressive as a whole up front with nine of the 20 current players on the roster coming from the transfer portal since Rich Rodriguez took over the program. Lee is player that should step into an immediate role with the football program and could be used in multiple ways.

Recruiting the position:

West Virginia continues to load up on offensive linemen during this off-season and still have several others scheduled for official visits this week meaning that the program likely isn’t done. Still, those options are offensive tackle bodies so the addition of Lee could fill the need inside.

If we’ve learned anything this off-season it’s that West Virginia is going to remain aggressive when it comes to filling out the roster and you can truly never say never at any spots on it.
