WVU Using Fullback Elijah Wellman Deceptively on Play-Fakes

When you think of important players in an offense, fullback tends to be ignored. Sure, fullbacks are not flashy. However, a good one fulfills an important role in an offense. Furthermore, it enables offensive coordinators to build a part of their gameplan around the position.

One such example is WVU’s Elijah Wellman. Offensive coordinator Jake Spavital has used him deceptively at times. This has been of huge benefit to the passing game.

Game 9 versus Iowa State: Power Run-Pass Option

Run Pass Option plays are the bread and butter of college football offenses, particularly in the Big 12. The West Virginia Mountaineers are no exception. Quarterback Will Grier has shown skill in executing these plays, correctly reading the defense and picking the ‘right’ option. Wellman has also featured.

The first touchdown of WVU’s 20-16 victory over the Iowa State Cyclones proved no exception. Having run two of their first three plays as runs with the wingback kicking out the defensive end, the Mountaineers showed the Cyclones a similar look on this 1st and Goal from the 10-yard line.
