The West Virginia Mountaineers football program has landed its top target under center in the 2026 recruiting class with a commitment from Kingston (Ga.) Cass 2026 Rivals250 quarterback Brodie McWhorter.

McWhorter, 6-foot-2, 190-pounds, chose the Mountaineers over a long list of scholarship offers which included Auburn, North Carolina, Georgia, Ohio State, Florida State, Florida, Oregon, Nebraska, Arkansas, Michigan State, Mississippi State and more.

The nation’s No. 137th ranked prospect, McWhorter developed a strong bond with the West Virginia coaching staff spearheaded by quarterbacks coach Tyler Allen. Allen has been integral in the pursuit of McWhorter and the connection made there was significant throughout the process.

The Big 12 Conference program jumped into the mix with a scholarship offer in January and since that point McWhorter has made multiple visits to campus.

The latest was a multi-day trip prior to the start of the dead period where he was able to spend more time with not only Allen but head coach Neal Brown and the rest of the coaches. That experienced cemented where the program fit into his recruitment and helped to secure his commitment.

A dynamic signal caller, McWhorter has plus arm talent and also plays with a calm demeanor on the field and has a passion for the game. As a sophomore, McWhorter threw for 2,128 yards and 20 touchdowns while completing 64-percent of his passes. He also rushed for 530 yards and 5 more scores showcasing his ability as a dual threat option under center for the Mountaineers.

The Rivals.com four-star prospect gives West Virginia a centerpiece to build the 2026 recruiting class around especially on the offensive side of the ball. McWhorter is rated as the ninth best quarterback nationally.

Skill set:

McWhorter is equipped with a strong, accurate arm and his abilities shine through on film. Throws the ball effortlessly and has a nice blend of athleticism where he can move the pocket as well as keep his eyes down the field and throw on the run. McWhorter delivers a very catchable ball, especially deep down the field and already has the confidence of an upperclassman at the position.

West Virginia wants to find signal callers that not only can throw the ball but move and that’s exactly what McWhorter brings to the table as an impressive athlete on top of his abilities to pitch it. This is one of the top quarterback targets in the nation and there are still two more high school seasons for him to further develop.

The Mountaineers swung big in the 2026 class under center and have connected with a massive addition.

Fitting the program:

McWhorter is one of the elite options nationally at the quarterback spot and West Virginia was able to secure his commitment early on in the process. That is critical for a number of reasons as the Mountaineers were able to fend off a literal who’s who of suitors for the gifted signal caller.

The commitment of McWhorter is a testament to the work and investment by the coaching staff which was able to get him to campus multiple times and help him become comfortable with the program and their plans. A big tip of the cap goes to Allen, who personally recruited McWhorter and was critical in the process.

McWhorter already likes the fit on the offensive side of the ball and how his skill set matches with what West Virginia wants to do at the quarterback spot. This is a major pickup for West Virginia out of the talent-rich state of Georgia and should also help to serve as a catapult for the rest of the class.

Recruiting the position:

With McWhorter in the fold, West Virginia will likely close down shop at the quarterback position in the 2026 class and instead focus their efforts elsewhere to build around him.
