Hurricane (W.Va.) 2026 athlete Laron Dues had been to West Virginia before, but this was a new experience in the sense that he was camping in front of the coaching staff.

And the 5-foot-9, 163-pounder, certainly made a positive impression.

Dues, the brother of 2025 offered wide receiver Tyshawn, competed during the event as a defensive back and was able to learn a number of things during the course of the camp.

“I got to watch players competing and having fun and that was the biggest thing that stood out,” he said.

The in-state prospect was able to work with secondary coach ShaDon Brown as well as safeties coach Dontae Wright on some techniques in order to improve his overall game.

“I learned how to stay patient and secure tackles a lot easier,” he said.

West Virginia is eyeballing Dues as a cornerback at the next level in large part because of his overall physicality and speed at the position. Dues received positive feedback when it came to his recruitment from the coaches as well and they made it clear that like his brother, there is an avenue for him to receive a scholarship offer if he continues to work and develop his game.

“I understand what I need to do for me to get the opportunity to become a Mountaineer,” he said.

Wide receivers coach Bilal Marshall has been the lead recruiter for Dues throughout the process and the relationship there is a solid one because of how up front he has been with his recruitment.

On top of the camp experience, Dues also had the chance to attend the cookout afterwards where he was able to solidify those bonds only further that he has with the coaches and other recruits.

Dues will next head to Ohio State once the dead period ends and plans to return to West Virginia for another game this fall in order to take in the environment.

Given the fact he is a 2026 recruit, Dues knows time is on his side and he is approaching the process maturely with what he wants to eventually find in a school.

“That’s going to play a big part in my recruitment. It’s not the name but where I’m wanted and feels like home,” Dues said.
